Gorizia, located near the mouth of the Isonzo and Vipava valleys on the plain, has throughout its history been a territory of conquest and control of the entry routes into Italy for peoples coming from northern and eastern Europe.
Ancient county of the Holy Roman Empire, it has its origins in the Germanic world and under the Habsburg government it flourished with its industries and trade, also becoming a tourist destination.
